1. What makes your program different from other programs, or what made you choose your program?

It's in Phoenix, the mountain biking is excellent, and the residency has a lot of autonomy.

2. If not answered above, what's the best aspect of your program?

     Autonomy

3. Are there any major upcoming changes to your program?

New Program Director is being recruited now

4. Is there anything you would change about your program if you could?

We need more faculty and better Ultrasound teaching.  Also, there is very little positive or negative feedback.

5. How much are you responsible for blood draws, putting in IVs, etc.?

     Only in difficult cases

6. Do you learn mostly from attendings, other residents, or textbooks? Does this vary when you do off-service rotations?

All learning is self directed, but there is a lot of bedside teaching in the ED,  less on off-service.

7. How does EMed rank in your hospital's hierarchy?

We are the strongest residency by a long shot.

8. What are the perks that your school provides (PDAs, textbooks, conference fees, meal tickets, etc.)?

Meals, book allowance, free parking, SAEM as an intern and ACEP as a senior.

9. How do you rate your rotations outside of the emergency department?

     Borderline useful.

10. What's the best elective you've done?

     Research is all I did.

11. How much does your program focus on research?

As much as you want,  but there are no requirements.

12. What do you love and hate most about the city you're in?

Heat and traffic, but ask in January

13. Please describe your typical month in terms of work hours and days off.

20 x 8-10 hour shifts with 4 conferences at five hours each.  5-6 total days off

14. How much time do you spend off-duty with the other residents?

Used to be a lot but I had kids

15. Do you have any international experience?

     No.

16. What are your plans after residency?

Private practice in Salt Lake City.

17. How prepared do you feel?

     Well prepared

18. Is there anything you'd like to tell us that we haven't asked?

Don't consider this residency if you need to have your hand held or if you expect any feedback.
